The Sea Trout.
The Sea Trout and the Brown Trout are of the one family, Salmo Trutta and the only difference between them is the sea trout migrates while the brown trout generally remains in the river or lake of its birth.
From an appearance point of view the sea trout looks very like a salmon but it is its behaviour that separates it from both salmon and brown trout.
The sea trout lay and fertilize their eggs in winter and the Alevin hatch about three months later. About another month later it develops into the Fry stage. Next comes the Parr stage when it looks very like a small brown trout with dark brown finger marks along its side. It spends the next three years in the river or lake as a Parr and feeds mainly on insects, crustacean and worms. At the end of this time it turns silver in colour and migrates to sea as a Smolt.
Although some smolts return within the first year, most return after a two to three year period and have numerous names depending on the region, two of the most popular being finnock and herling.

Spawning Calendar: Finnock – Mid Summer.. Mature fish – Late Spring/Early Summer. – Mid to Late Autumn.
Best Fly-fishing Conditions: Latter stage of receding spate or flood.
Best spots on the River: The tail of the pools after dusk when the fish are running.
Best Flies: Teal, Blue & Silver; Medicine; Butcher; Black Pennell; Connemara Black; Stoats Tail; Grouse & Green; Silver Invicta; Pheasant & Yellow; Peter Ross; Mallard & Claret; Grey Monkey
