August Trout Flies

August is the month for exploring those parts of the river not normally accessible when water levels are higher. During the warm evenings, the Pale Watery or Pale Evening Dun is the fly to watch out for in the deeper, slow flowing parts of the river. The damselfly nymph is an importance source of food for the trout especially during the early afternoon.
But the best of the fishing is to be had during the late evening to dusk rise when the trout are feeding freely on Small Sedges or Rails as they are known in Ireland, Chironomids and Ants. When darkness falls, the White Moth can provide some excellent sport for the night angler.
On the lakes the Caenis Fly is still the dominent species of flylife on the water during the day and early evening.The Daddy Long Legs are in abundance during the warm August afternoons. Later in the evening Sedges provide some excellent fishing with the larger trout being tempted to the surface. In the shallower parts of the lakes, artificial representations of Freshwater Crustaceans can be very successful when trout are feeding on or close to the lake bed.
