July Trout Flies
With water levels approaching their lowest and water temperatures approaching their highest, clear skies and the warmth of the summer sun combine to make July and August the poorest months of the season for trout fishing.
On the rivers, as the weeds are getting stronger and more plentiful, it may be a good idea to increase the breaking strain of your cast by a lb or 1/2 Kg to reduce losses of both trout and flies.
The brightness and heat of the day combine to kill the trout?s appetite and force it to seek shade in the dense clumps of weeds, this makes for poor fishing in the forenoon and afternoon.
In the early morning Caenis or Perch Flies hatch in abundance and trout feeding on them do so to excess. But the Caenis Fly is not known as the Angler's Curse for nothing and catching trout on this fly is extremely difficult. Fly presentation and casting accuracy are a must.
The late evening to dusk rise is the only redeeming feature of this month, with good sport to be had on the Blue Winged Olive, Sedges and Chironomids while Moths and Ants are the terrestrial species to watch out for.
On the lakes, the Caenis or Perch Fly is causing the angler no end of frustration during the day, and his or her only salvation is found in the late evening rise with the arrival of Sedges and Chironomids on the water. The larvae of one species of Chironomid, known as the Blood Worm should be included on the anglers cast when the drift includes the deeper parts of the lake.
