June Trout Flies
June sees water levels continue to drop, temperatures rising and water clarity improving. The first weeds of the season begin to appear from the river bed and the shallower parts of the lake. With improved water clarity comes improved vision, from the trout?s point of view that is and so the angler's approach to his game begins to play a deciding factor on his or her success rate.
In every book written about Fly Fishing, at least one chapter is given over to "approaching the fish". Our only advice on this subject is to use common sense, keep low as you approach the riverbank, utilize the natural cover of the plant life along the riverbank to its maximum, approach from downstream when possible as the fish will always face into the current and last but not least, remember that light refracts as it enters or leaves water allowing the trout a lower angle of vision along the riverbank.
Having made a successful approach, the flylife on the river bares an uncanny resemblance to that in May. Mayfly are still hatching, providing good fishing in the afternoon while Sedges provide the best sport in the evening. The Blue Winged Olive makes its appearance on the river towards the end of June. This fly is easily recognised by its three tails unlike the other olive species which have only two. The Black Gnat is common over the summer months and trout feeding on it or other black fly species will readily take the artificial representation of this terrestrial. Other species of flies on the river for the month of June include Olives, Chironomids and Ants.
On the lakes the Mayfly is still a major part of the trouts diet during the forenoon and afternoon with Sedges and Chironomids providing the best sport during the evening to dusk rise.
