April Trout Flies

April heralds the arrival of the fly fishing season in earnest. With temperatures rising, water levels dropping and the arrival of the longer evenings; this is the month when most fly anglers start their fishing season.
Surface feeding increases with more abundant hatches of Dark & Medium Olives and the eagerly awaited arrival of the Iron Blue Dun on the rivers.
In April, hatches of these fly's are at their greatest in cold weather or after a sudden drop in temperature.
On the lakes, boats start to reappear as the angler's prepare for the first real action of the season with the arrival of the Duck Fly also known as the Black Fly or the Black Buzzer. The pupae of these chironomids send the trout into a feeding frenzy as they ascend towards the surface and the lake angler without a few Duck Fly Pupae representations in his fly box is inviting a few very frustrating days fishing indeed.
In the warmer afternoons, as the month progresses, hatches of Lake Olives begin to appear in the shallower parts of the lake.
